The Val d'Orcia in Tuscany is one of the most beautiful landscapes in the world with its rolling hills dotted with lone cypress trees and avenues of cypress trees leading up to hilltop villas and classic hill towns. At the same time it is also one of the most artificial and manufactured landscapes on earth. On the high road from San Quirico to Pienza there is a stunning view across to the Chapel of the Madonna of Vitaleta. I had stopped, just after sunset, to shoot this view when I noticed this lone tree down in the valley below me. It's location against a ridge in the steep ploughed field made a great composition.
