Winter is by far the most reliable season for good quality surf in Cornwall. Distant Atlantic storms create big swells; offshore winds are supplied via polar continental winds blowing in from the east across Northern Europe. The winds and swells sometimes coincide and combine to create classic surfing conditions. When good conditions arrive at Summerleaze Beach at Bude on the North Cornwall coast I have an excellent vantage point for surf photography at the end of the breakwater here, allowing me to get very close to the action..These two surfers were captured just after thick sea fog had lifted on a cold day in December. They certainly had not just paddled out and must have been surfing in the fog.
